Debunking Common Chiropractic Myths

Most people have a stereotypical image of doctors—blue scrubs, a white lab coat and a stethoscope draped around the neck. On the other hand, alternative medical treatments like chiropractic are gaining popularity in Canada. While countless people will attest to the health benefits a chiropractor can give, others might hold out due to misconceptions about them. Below are two of the most popular chiropractic myths and the truth behind them:

Chiropractors must earn their degree from a reputable chiropractic school in the same way that doctors must study medicine first before being granted their M.D.s. In fact, chiropractors are one of the five professions legally entitled to append “doctor” to their names. Additionally, they must pass national and provincial licensure exams before they can practice.

When people think about chiropractic treatments, the first thing they think about—or rather hear—are the cracking sounds. Naturally, they associate those sounds with pain. In reality though, the body's joints are lubricated with a substance called synovial fluid, which contains dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. When a chiropractor does adjustments to the spine, the pent up gases are released, thus causing the sound.

Chiropractors are trustworthy health professionals who want nothing but their patients' well-being. Don't let misconceptions refrain you from taking advantage of the pain relief and other treatments they can give you.

Understanding the Basics of a Subluxation

The complex and highly delicate network of neurons and nerves that exists along a person's spine is largely responsible for ensuring that the body's different parts function properly. When something is even slightly amiss with the spine and the nerves that are located there, it can lead to problems such as sleep disorders. The only way to correct such issues is to readjust the spine so that the irregularities that have emerged are eliminated.

Chiropractors are the professionals who are best equipped to deal with these issues that involve irregularities with the spine, which are also known as subluxations. Through periodic adjustments of the spine, the problems that can emerge as a result of the subluxation can be reduced or even eliminated completely.

These professionals may address the subluxation in a variety of ways. Their methods will differ from one patient to the next, as they will factor in a person's age and general physical condition when carrying out a treatment. Younger patients with bones that are still developing will require a gentler touch from the chiropractor during adjustment. In turn, a greater amount of force may be needed in order to properly align the spine of an adult patient.

Types and Possible Causes of Back Pain

Back pain is a problem that has plagued everyone at least once in his life. According to reports, lower back pain is the fifth most common reason for a visit to a physician. In the UK, back pain is the largest cause of work-related absence, according to the UK National Health Service.

There are many possible reasons for back pain, but a common factor among them is the increased pressure on the spine to an amount that the person is not accustomed to. Some of the usual risk factors are pregnancy, obesity, strenuous physical work or exercise, and bad posture.

Back pain is classified according to the duration of the pain. Back pain that’s sudden and persists up to three months is called acute back pain. Pain that gradually increases over time and lasts longer than three months is referred to as chronic back pain. The second type of back pain typically causes long-term problems, and may be indicative of more than just added pressure on the spine.

Fortunately, the regular back pain can be easily addressed. The person simply has to lie down and rest, and straighten the spine to relieve the pressure. For lingering back pain, however, a handful of treatments are recommended, including massages, cortisone shots, shiatsu, and chiropractic treatment.

Fibromyalgia and chiropractic

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain related illness that is commonly seen by chiropractors.  Visiting a chiropractor is becoming increasingly popular for sufferers of this disease because chiropractic is a natural therapy that is able to relieve stress and pain.

Fibromyalgia is an auto immunity disorder, meaning that the body in some way is fighting against its own tissue.

A preliminary study by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto showed that a 4 week chiropractic treatment program resulted in improved pain levels and ranges of motion in patients versus a control group.

Benefits of Chiropractic for Fibromyalgia
1)      With a doctor’s supervision, the patient can lower the amount of pain medication taken
2)      Reduction of pain and trigger points characteristic of fibromyalgia
3)      Better sleep allowing the body to rest and recuperate
4)      Improvement of chronic fatigue that characterizes fibromyalgia

If you suffer from Fibromyalgia, chiropractic is strongly recommended, and will give you a great benefit.

In many countries the doctor recommends chiropractic patients with fibromyalgia.

Make an appointment today with Dr. Kris Dorken, Toronto chiropractor to be able to guide you with a wellness program.

What is Healthy?

What is healthy?

More than the absence of pain, health is a physical and emotional state of being.

It is the adaptive capacity of the body. For the time that it costs your body adapt or respond to physical, mental or chemical stress, is when your body compensates and ends up losing his internal balance.

It depends on how well your body can adapt.  There are physical, mental and chemical stresses in the body and when you look at the time it takes for your body to get back to being internally balanced is how healthy or unhealthy one is.

As the body weakens, one can find the onset of symptoms.  Health comes from good nutrition, exercise, proper rest, a positive mental attitude and a nervous system that is free of interference.

Many disease processes take months and even years to show up externally. If one covers or masks these symptoms, it does not mean that the body is working normally.  Take a look at what chiropractic can do, and has been doing for more than 110 years.

Relief from Sciatic Pain

What is sciatica or sciatic pain?

Sciatica Pain or Sciatica is characterized by pain radiating from below the buttocks, thigh, lower leg and foot back. The sciatic nerve emerges from the lower spine, passes through the leg to the nerves, muscles and the skin of the leg and foot. This nerve is the longest in the and can be exposed to many different lower back and pelvis injuries.

What causes sciatica?

Damage or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can cause pain that moves along the leg from the thigh to the foot and the toes. The sciatic pain can be caused by back injuries, arthritis of the spine or irritation by pressure on the nerve at different points along the path of the nerve.

The pain may also be a result of joints that trap the nerve (subluxation), muscle spasm, herniated discs or damage to the lower thigh muscles.

Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?

Doctors of chiropractic are educated and trained in the detection and warning of problems that can affect the spine.

Many cases of sciatica/sciatic pain can be effectively corrected through a chiropractic care program. Your chiropractor can provide you with a full examination and recommendations for appropriate care.

The first visit to the chiropractor may include x-rays to detect possible underlying pathologies and any distortion of your spine. It is possible that on this occasion the chiropractor can give you your first chiropractic adjustment to help reduce tension in the spinal discs, alleviate joint tension, restore mobility and remove pressure from the nerves. In addition, your chiropractor can advise you on treatment options for sciatica, therapeutic exercise, posture control and a full program of chiropractic care.

What Happens When You Have Whiplash

The impact produced in the human body during an car accident normally affects the cervical spine. This impact on the cervical spine is more commonly known by the name "whiplash" or "cervical sprain".

The cervical spine or, neck, is very delicate and houses the spinal cord that sends messages from the brain to control all aspects of the body .

Whiplash injuries account for more than 65% of all bodily injury claims (Navan et al., 2000) and in Canada, whiplash injuries account for over 2 million insurance claims every year.

People suffering from a cervical sprain may suffer intense pain which, although not malignant in nature, can produce a big deterioration in the quality of life such as:
Back pain     Vertigo     Epilepsy
Neck pain     Headache     Herniated disk
Jaw pain     Migraine    Fibromyalgia
Tinnitus    Blurred Vision    Facial Pains
It is even more severe in children due to the fragility of its spine and walking stability of the ligaments and bones.

The specific chiropractic treatment of the cervical spine that we offer in our Chiropractic consultation, offers solutions to the syndrome of whiplash or cervical sprain effectively and permanently, without drugs or surgery.
